Nebraska Food Cooperative
The gardening and farmers market seasons are slowly winding down, but you can purchase local food through the Nebraska Food Cooperative Now is a great time to sign up to be a member and begin ordering local cheese, meat and vegetables all year. Community CROPS is selling produce through the co-op, and it has been a great partnership. Visit the NFC web site at www.nebraskafood.org
Recent Media Coverage
Pick up a copy of The Reader this week and read a great article by Avishay Artsy about Brad Kindler and the positive impact he is having on local youth. Read the full article on-line
Community CROPS was also featured on NET radio a few weeks ago. Sarah McCammon did a wonderful job portraying the farming project and its participants. Listen to the story on NET's website.
Fall Planting
There is a lot to do in the fall outside, but don't forget that this is the best time of year to plant garlic. Buy bulbs at your local farmers' market or organic ones at the grocery store and plant the cloves. They'll start growing now and then finish in the spring. By late June of next year, you'll have plenty of garlic, with very little work required. Click this link for more information.
This is also the time to be planting cover crops to enrich your soil for next year. Read this article at Organic Gardening on cover crops for more information.
Vegetables for Sale
Community CROPS will have a booth at the Sunday Old Cheney Farmers' Market through the end of October. We will have basil, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, okra and more for sale, while supplies last.
If you are interested in buying large amounts of basil from us, let us know and we can bring it to the market or arrange another way to get it to you. Basil is $3.50 for a half pound (about a large produce bag full). We have an ample supply!
