University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension has observed an interesting upswing in gardening, locally-grown foods, and farmers markets. Much might be attributed to the current popularity of television food shows requiring those essential garden-fresh ingredients. Other reasons may be a craving for the great outdoors and physical activity. On a practical basis, some will point to saving money and reducing the carbon footprint of food traveling long distances to the consumer.
